An "Active" permit means work is in progress and hasn't been finaled by the city yet. Neither is automatically a red flag, but it's worth asking about directly.

What if there's clearly work done but no permit on file?

Certain renovations, additions, and system replacements legally require a permit in Austin. If you can see evidence of work - a new addition, an updated electrical panel, a converted garage - with nothing matching in the permit history, that's worth raising with the seller, contractor, or a licensed inspector before moving forward.
