What does an open or expired permit mean?

An "Active" permit means work is in progress and hasn't been finaled by the city yet. An "Expired" permit means it lapsed before the work was ever closed out - that can mean the project stalled, or that the work was never properly inspected and signed off. What if there's clearly work done but no permit on file?

Certain renovations, additions, and system replacements legally require a permit in Austin.
