No - Texas does not license general contractors statewide. Electricians and HVAC/mechanical contractors need a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), and plumbers need one from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE). General remodeling and construction work has no state licensing requirement, though some cities and counties have their own registration rules.

How can I verify a contractor's license?

For electrical or HVAC work, search the contractor's name at tdlr.texas.gov. For plumbing, search tsbpe.texas.gov. This site doesn't show license status directly - this permit history is a separate, complementary check, not a substitute for verifying licensing directly with the state.

What does an open or expired permit mean?

An "Active" permit means work is in progress and hasn't been finaled by the city yet. An "Expired" permit means it lapsed before the work was ever closed out - that can mean the project stalled, or that the work was never properly inspected and signed off. What if there's clearly work done but no permit on file?
