Does Texas require a general contractor's license?

No - Texas does not license general contractors statewide. Electricians and HVAC/mechanical contractors need a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), and plumbers need one from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE). An "Active" permit means work is in progress and hasn't been finaled by the city yet. What if there's clearly work done but no permit on file?

Certain renovations, additions, and system replacements legally require a permit in Austin.
