How to Check If a Contractor Pulled a Permit in Austin

Before you hire, or before you pay a final invoice, it's worth confirming a permit was actually filed for the work. Here's how to check, and what the result does (and doesn't) tell you.

Search the contractor's name

Type the company or contractor's name into the search box on the homepage, or browse the full contractor directory. Each result links to a page listing every permit filed under that name.

What a contractor's page shows

Each contractor page shows their trade (when known), how many permits they've pulled in the last 12 months, the total valuation of that work, and a table of individual permits with the property address, permit type and status. Phone number and address are available on Pro.

What permit history doesn't tell you

A permit on file confirms the work was filed with the city - it isn't the same as a state license check. Electricians, for example, are separately licensed by the State of Texas through TDLR under the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Act; permit history and state licensing are two different records kept by two different agencies.

Permit history also won't tell you whether a contractor is still actively in business today - only that they filed permits at some point. Recent activity is a reasonable signal, but not a guarantee.

If you can't find a permit at all

No results for a contractor doesn't automatically mean something's wrong - some jobs are owner-permitted, and small companies sometimes work under a general contractor's permit instead of their own. If it's a project that should have its own permit - a remodel, an addition, new electrical or plumbing work - it's worth asking the contractor directly which permit covers the job.

Common questions

How often is contractor permit data updated?

The database syncs every day from City of Austin records. Free accounts see permits with a 24-hour delay; Pro sees the same day's filings.

Does this show a contractor's license status?

No - it shows permit filing history with the City of Austin. State trade licenses (like TDLR's electrician license) are a separate record kept by the state, not the city.
